Pete Buttigieg takes the helm of U.S. DOT

Today marks another historic day since the end of last year’s November election. Former Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg was confirmed as the next U.S. Secretary of Transportation, making him the first LGBTQ+ person confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as cabinet secretary ever and putting one more crack to shatter the rainbow ceiling.

Our community has seen its share of firsts leading up to this day and I’m so proud of all of the work and effort it has taken to get here; the confirmation of Secretary Buttigieg is no exception. We finally have a voice at the most senior level of the federal government that we’ve been promised for so long to protect, inspire and most importantly live up to the ideals of our nation of a more just, equal and representative government. Now we have someone at the top making sure that they make good on their promise.

I’m filled with hope as we look toward a better tomorrow with this appointment as we continue to work towards a more diverse and inclusive government that reflects all of America; it is important our leaders look and live the lives of the people they represent. I’m encouraged to see someone managing a federal agency who has lived a life similar to mine at the highest level of government.

Now let’s get to work and show them how we get things done. Congratulations and good luck, Secretary and Chasten Buttigieg!
