FUSD votes to remove Fresno High’s Native American mascot image

I’m encouraged by the decision of Fresno Unified School District to
remove the image of the Native American “Warrior” as the mascot for Fresno High
School.

Though it was a storied mascot in my time at the school, with time, respectful
approaches to honoring our indigenous communities must change as well. While it
doesn’t go far enough I am hopeful for the future. So many disparities and injustices must be acknowledged at the senior-most levels in our educational institutions and I believe it is a task worth taking on.

We must commit to repairing generations of wrong-doing in order to heal our respective communities.
